Lateefah Williams To Run For D.C. Attorney General

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Washington attorney who's spent most of her career doing legislative and public policy work is the latest candidate to enter the race for District of Columbia attorney general.

Thirty-seven-year-old Lateefah Williams announced her candidacy Thursday for the position, which District voters will elect for the first time this fall. The attorney general has previously been appointed by the mayor.

Williams has worked as counsel to the state Senate delegation in Prince George's County, Maryland, among other policy positions. She is also a former president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, a prominent gay political group.

Other candidates include defense attorney Paul Zukerberg and Edward "Smitty" Smith, a former federal lawyer. White-collar defense attorney Karl Racine of the well-known Venable firm is also considering a run.
