Large Portion of Ellicott City Main Street Now Open

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --  Two months after deadly flooding in historic ellicott city, Main Street re-opens to pedestrians. Some came to check out the progress, others came to support businesses who are trying to get back to normal.

Su Casa on Main Street is open for business once again.

"We are really excited and we are really excited for a few more of our neighbors to re-open," said Su Casa owner, Nicholas Johnson.

This, after floodwaters rushed through town, killing two people, and destroying shops and restaurants.

Unfortunately, many of the area businesses are still closed, but the area has since re-opened to pedestrian traffic on Main Street.

"Its amazing how much damage there was, and how long it has taken to fix it, but it's getting better, so that's good," said Howard County resident Ted Cooper.

Crews are still hard at work repairing the damage.

"I am here to help some of the store owners clean their content, try to get them back to the way they were before the flood," said Melissa Poole, with cleaning company Serve-Pro.

It will take time to get completely back to normal, but there's a lot of love in the historic town.

"We heard that Su Casa is having their re-opening today and we want to come support them, and be there for the community," said Jennifer Taylor, Catonsville.

"When you're on your 9th or 10th hour of the day and you think 'Man, is this really worth it?' and someone says something like that to you, it really gets you going," said Johnson.

A portion of Main Street is still closed, from Maryland Avenue to Old Columbia Pike remains closed until October 6, as merchants in that area continue to rebuild and repair.

On Saturday, Su Casa is holding their grand re-opening. They will donate a portion of all sales to neighboring businesses working to re-build.
