Kennedy Center Opens Revived 'Side Show' Musical

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A revival of the musical "Side Show" is opening at the Kennedy Center, featuring a collection of misfits from the carnival world.

"Side Show" is based on the true story of conjoined twins, Violet and Daisy, who became vaudeville stars during the Depression but who longed to find love. It opens with the song, "Come Look at the Freaks."

The show has been rewritten under director Bill Condon, and the "freaks" have been reimagined with elaborate costumes. It will run until July 13.

The Kennedy Center revival was produced with San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse. It features book and lyrics by Bill Russell and music by Henry Krieger. "Side Show" opened on Broadway in 1997.

Two recent Kennedy Center revivals have moved to Broadway: 2009's "Ragtime" and "Follies" in 2011.
