Justice Department Announces $20M for Police Body Cameras
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Justice Department is awarding more than $20 million for local law enforcement agencies across the country to buy body cameras for officers in the wake of fatal shootings of black men by police that have led to protests and demonstrations.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday announced that the money was being awarded to help departments establish or enhance their use of body-worn cameras. The Justice Department said the grants were being awarded to 106 state, city, tribal and municipal law enforcement agencies.
Lynch announced the grants as she opened a Justice Department summit in Little Rock focusing on ways to reduce violent crime.
Lynch's announcement follows the recent fatal shootings of black men by police in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Charlotte, North Carolina.
