Joe Biden Wins Maryland, With Its 10 Electoral Votes

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Democrat Joe Biden won Maryland's 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating President Donald Trump in a heavily Democratic state.

Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-to-1 in Maryland. A Republican presidential candidate hasn't won in Maryland since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

Tim Barrett, a Democrat, said he voted for Biden in Annapolis on Tuesday because he agrees with his policies. Barrett also said Biden made a strong impression on him when he saw him in Delaware at an event several years ago.

"The man is as genuine and kind as he's purported to be," Barrett said. "I was at an event with him, and he took time to be very gracious toward me, looking at me as an individual and just talking to me directly, and I'll never forget that experience."

KEY RACES & QUESTION

In 2016, Trump received 34% of the vote in Maryland, which was won by Hillary Clinton that year.

Biden also won Virginia on Tuesday.

Not even Republican Gov. Larry Hogan voted for Trump, either in 2016 or this year. Hogan, the second Republican governor to win reelection in the state's history, voted for Ronald Reagan as a write-in candidate this year, even though the former president has been dead for more than 16 years. Four years ago, Hogan voted for his father, a former Maryland congressman, as a write-in candidate instead of Trump.

Trump made national headlines last year when he described Maryland's 7th Congressional District as a "disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess" where "no human being would want to live." The district includes a large portion of Baltimore, the state's largest city, as well as parts of its suburbs.

Both of Maryland's U.S. senators are Democrats, and Democrats held seven of the state's eight seats in the U.S. House of Representatives going into the election.
