Internal Investigation Underway After Gun Is Found In Holding Cell

BALTIMORE (WJZ)— The Baltimore Police Department has launched an internal investigation after a gun is found in a prison holding cell.

As Pat Warren reports this is not the first time one has been smuggled in.

Police say the discovery was made in one of their Eastern District prisoner holding cells.

"The safety of our officers and citizens is paramount. All of the circumstances surrounding this incident will be thoroughly examined to ensure that this does not happen again," said a spokesperson for the police department.

Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis says he believes this was human error and not a problem with policy or procedure.

"It's a dangerous scenario that makes my heart drop every time I hear that a firearm gets introduced into a police station environment," Davis said to our media partner The Baltimore Sun. "It's not acceptable to me, but these things happen in this profession."

In January, a man tried to smuggle in a loaded gun into the Northeastern District. And nearly a year ago, a suspect killed himself with a gun he had smuggled into the Southwestern District.

Authorities say if criminal or administrative charges are warranted they will be obtained accordingly.
