Inmate Hurt In Stairwell Attack At Western Maryland Prison

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a 26-year-old inmate was attacked in a stairwell at a western Maryland prison and cut on his face and neck.

The Herald-Mail reports that Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Gerard Shields said the inmate was attacked by an unknown assailant Wednesday night at the Maryland Correctional Institution south of Hagerstown. He says the inmate was taken to Meritus Medical Center with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

Shields says the inmate was serving a seven-year, 11-month sentence for robbery and drug charges at the medium-security prison.
