Injured Infant Dropped Off At Daycare Dies

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office says a 7-month-old hospitalized with head injuries after being dropped off at a daycare despite signs of distress has died.

Department spokeswoman Jennifer Stone said in a news release that the infant died Friday at Children's National Medical Center in Washington.

Deputies had been called to the hospital on Tuesday. Authorities say doctors determined that the infant's head injuries were the result of the child being a "battered baby."

The sheriff's office says detectives determined 30-year-old Nathan Bailey caused the injuries and routinely dropped the child off, ignoring the child's distress. Bailey, who is not related to the infant, was charged with first-degree assault, child abuse and child neglect.

The incident remains under investigation.
