BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Another blast of winter weather.

A sleet and rain mix was in Baltimore, just in time for the evening rush hour.

Freezing rain arrived early Tuesday afternoon and persisted throughout much of the night. This slowed the evening rush hour commute, with slick spots and black ice reported.

The State Highway Administration urged drivers to pay attention to weather conditions and to change their schedule accordingly.

"This storm has the potential to significantly impact today's rush hour with a snow and ice combination," said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. "If at all possible, we are asking people to avoid driving during this storm so crews can treat roadways efficiently. The more vehicles along the road, the harder it is for crews. If there is a collision, our trucks get stuck in the same traffic jam as everyone else and snow and ice will build up in the travel lanes."

Looking ahead, although it will be warmer Wednesday morning--a winter storm watch was issued for Baltimore for Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. until Thursday 7 p.m.

Some places are already reporting early closings.

The federal government in the Washington region is open Tuesday, but workers have the option of taking unscheduled leave or teleworking, the Associated Press reports.
