Traffic Backed Up For Hours After Tanker Flips Over On I-95, Driver Taken To Shock Trauma

CECIL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- A man was taken to shock trauma Thursday after Highway officials said he was trapped inside his overturned trailer for an hour in the middle of I-95.

Traffic was going nowhere on I-95 north near exit 109 in Elkton after a tractor-trailer flipped upside-down in the middle of the highway.

"It's terrible," said traveler Ken Fox. "It was some type of fuel truck on its back."

Officials said the crash happened sometime after noon but with the driver trapped inside for an hour, and potentially hazardous material in the tanker, traffic came to a standstill.

With both sides of the highway down to zero miles per hour, MDTA said the backups went for at least two miles.

"Traffic was really bad," said traveler Mike Marcinkowski. "We were actually saying on the way own that 'thank God we are not stuck on that side' because we had ti coming out of New York."

The gridlock forced detours all around Elkton in a high volume stretch of 95.

Data from the Maryland Transportation Authority said in 2017, that 31 million vehicles passed through this stretch between Baltimore City and Delaware, showing that any disruptions create significant ripple effects.

The southbound lane finally reopened two hours later, with the northbound side getting freed up three hours after that.

"I was grateful I was heading south, not north." Said traveler David Gonzales.

Maryland State Police are still investigating what caused the crash.

Officials said that the truck driver was the only one taken to shock trauma.
