Maintenance Worker Injured In Reported Home Explosion, Fire In Baltimore County

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- One person was injured and a family was displaced by a fire and reported explosion in Baltimore County Tuesday.

The house explosion was in the 4200 block of Twin Circle Way in the Baltimore Highlands neighborhood near Lansdowne.

"Crews arrived on scene to find a heavy fire showing on the second floor," Baltimore County Fire Specialist Nicholas Tyson said. "Based off of the comments that the callers gave to the dispatchers, crews made the decision to fight the fire from the outside until the gas was shut off. Once the crews got the gas shut off, they made entry to put the fire out."

Tyson also said that a family of four, as well as a 29-year-old maintenance worker, were inside the home at the time of the reported explosion.

All five were able to get out of the house, but the maintenance worker suffered serious burns. He was transported to Hopkins Bayview Burn Center.

"[The maintaince man] did sustain some serious burns," Tyson said.

Chopper 13 was over the scene:

Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire. Three units were impacted, but only one family was displaced.

Richard Cowan was on his way to pick up his wife at the time of the incident.

"I didn't hear an explosion, didn't hear any sirens, until I opened the front door," he said. "There was smoke everywhere. I had to close the door because I was breathing it in."

BGE said their crews also responded to the scene and found no gas-related issues in the area.
