Hogan: Western Maryland Welcome Center To Reopen In Spring
FRIENDSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Gov. Larry Hogan says the Youghiogheny Overlook Welcome Center in western Maryland will reopen in the spring.
Monday's announcement comes six years after the state closed the travel center at the rest area along Interstate 68 in Friendsville, about 20 miles east of the border with West Virginia. Hogan says reopening the gateway travel center will benefit western Maryland businesses and the tourism industry.
The welcome center will operate Thursday through Monday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will be closed on major holidays. The rest area at the site is currently open around the clock, seven days a week.
The State Highway Administration owns and maintains the rest stop and building that houses the center, and the Office of Tourism Development runs the center and provides staffing.
