Historic Elkton Wedding Chapel May Close
ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- Elkton's Historic Little Wedding Chapel, the site of thousands of weddings, is in danger of closing after the owner says he is suddenly facing a bill he can't pay.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the Cecil County chapel turned to crowdfunding website GoFundMe last week to help pay an $80,000 bill. As of Friday morning, $315 had been raised.
The chapel's owner Frank Smith says Cecil Bank recently elected not to renegotiate the chapel's line of credit, demanding the payment in full. Smith has since hired an attorney for a September hearing.
Cecil Bank's president and CEO, Terrie G. Spiro, declined the newspaper's request for comment.
The stone building, which dates to 1813, became a chapel in the 1920s and held the weddings of jazz great Billie Holiday and baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays.
