Hillary Clinton Under Fire For Email Account

WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- Hillary Clinton is under fire. The former Secretary of State may have violated federal records laws.

Jessica Kartalija explains.

The former Secretary of State used a personal email account for business and didn't regularly turn those emails over to the government.

Hillary Clinton was always on the go as Secretary of State but two years after leaving the post, it's what she did behind the scenes that's raising eyebrows.

Clinton did not have a government email account and conducted all of her official business using a personal email address during her four years at the State Department. According to a New York Times report, Clinton aides failed to routinely preserve and turn over her emails for collection---a move that may have violated federal records laws.

Clinton served as Secretary of State from 2009-2013.

The Times quotes a former director at the National Archives and Records Administration as calling her personal email use unusual, saying it should have only been used in an emergency.

Clinton did recently turn over thousands of emails from her private account but only after aides reviewed them and picked which ones to turn over.

Clinton is widely considered the front-runner for next year's Democratic presidential nomination.

In a Tweet, Jeb Bush---a likely 2016 Republican contender---called for her unclassified emails to be released.

A Clinton aide maintains the former secretary complied with the "letter and spirit of the rules."

The State Department says current Secretary John Kerry is the first person in the position to reply primarily on a standard government email account.

The State Department has started regularly archiving all of Secretary John Kerry's emails to ensure that they are capturing all federal records.

A separate report has emerged that during his tenure at the Department of Dense, former Secretary Chuck Hagel also did not use an official email account.
