Hagerstown Paying More For Police Presence
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Hagerstown is sweetening a subsidy for police officers who live within the city limits.
The Herald-Mail reported in its Thursday edition that the City Council has agreed to increase from $100 to $300 a month the incentive for police officers living within three blocks of the city center.
Those living three to six blocks out would get a $200-a-month subsidy. And those living farther out, but still within the city limits would get $100.
The graduated structure is new. Citywide subsidies of $100 have been offered since September 2012.
City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman says the number of officers living in the city has increased from seven to 15 since the incentive was introduced.
The new incentives also apply for the first time to local police academy trainees.
