Hagerstown Mulls Subsidizing Student Housing
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The western Maryland city of Hagerstown is considering subsidizing four apartments for use by students at the University System of Maryland downtown campus.
The Herald-Mail reported Monday on the proposal by city planning and economic development officials.
Each unit would house up to two students within a two-block radius of the campus. The apartments would feature dusk-to-dawn lighting, security cameras and intercom door buzzers.
City Council member Donald Munson says he's concerned about the cost to the city of repairing damage caused by tenants. He says the students or their parents should assume liability for damage to the apartments.
The downtown campus opened in 2005 and covers about half of a city block. It has an average enrollment of 500 students.
