Group To Consider Possible Name Change For Byrd Stadium

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- The University of Maryland's president has announced the creation of a group that will consider a possible name change for the school's football stadium.

The Washington Post reports the Byrd Stadium Naming Work Group will hold its first meeting on Monday.

President Wallace D. Loh says the group is meant to provide a "thoughtful and balanced assessment of possible options" regarding the stadium's name.

The group is made up of 19 faculty and staff members, students and alumni.

A coalition of student groups have long advocated for a new stadium name, saying that Byrd Stadium's namesake, former university president H.C. "Curley" Byrd, was a racist and a segregationist whose beliefs go against Maryland's flagship school's mission and principles.

The group's final report is due to Loh in December.
