Governor's Charter School Gets Passing Grade In Senate
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Senate is giving good marks to Gov. Larry Hogan's charter school bill.
On Monday, the Senate voted 46-1 in support of the amended bill, which some lawmakers called a "balanced approach" to the governor's initiative.
In an interview on Monday with The Associated Press, Hogan said the amendments "basically gutted" his bill.
Among the 10 amendments is the creation of a school funding study, more emphasis on local education boards as chartering authorities, and mandates that charter school teachers have the same certification requirements as their peers in traditional public schools.
The approved bill also provides for more flexibility for charter schools that are in good financial standing and have been in operation for five or more years.
The bill now heads to the House for consideration.
