Girl, 5, Shot In Baltimore Is Sister Of 7-Year-Old Murder Victim Taylor Hayes

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Five-year-old Amy Hayes' great-grandmother saw her collapse just outside her window in west Baltimore Monday night.

Vivian Nealy said she watched as her great-granddaughter walked one block to the corner store to get some juice—then saw her fall to the ground at McKean and Mosher.

"I said, 'Amy, get up!' She said, 'I can't get up Gamma.' I'd first thought she fell trying to tie her shoe," Nealy said.

Amy was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the groin in west Baltimore Monday evening. Police said she underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

WJZ learned she is the younger sister of Taylor Hayes. Hayes was a 7-year-old shot and killed while sitting in the back of a car, also in west Baltimore.

Investigators said the shooting of Taylor's sister happened in the 1000 block of McKean Ave. They believe she was caught in the middle of a shootout between suspects in a vehicle and suspects on foot.

Nearby residents heard gunshots, and when someone looked outside, they saw the 5-year-old victim had been shot. A neighbor then picked her up and drove her to Shock Trauma.

Her great-grandmother said Amy was shot in the back.

The bullet traveled through her body and exited her groin. She's undergone several surgeries and is expected to survive.

"I miss her. I just want her to come home," Nealy said from the same window.

Of the violence, she choked back tears and said "It has to stop."

When Amy was shot, she dropped the baby doll she'd gotten for her fifth birthday last week. It sat in the street next to bullet markers.

This is the second time this year the family has been touched by violence.

Amy Hayes is the half sister of Taylor Hayes, a 7-year-old killed in a drive-by shooting over the summer.

Taylor was shot July 5 at 2:30 p.m. in Edmondson Village area of the city.

Police walked Tuesday night where the 5-year-old was shot, The walk was at 5:30 p.m., and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Interim Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle said Tuesday that police do not have any solid leads in this case at this time.

Mayor Catherine Pugh voiced her frustration for a problem her city grapples with daily.

"We want to stop the guns," Pugh said. "...People trying to get ready for Thanksgiving and now we got to worry about children being shot, so we can do better,"

5-Year-Old Girl Shot In Baltimore; Taken To Hospital

Interim Baltimore City Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle told Hellgren he does not have any video of the shooting and does not have a firm number of suspects.

Tuggle said Hayes was caught in the crossfire between people in a vehicle and someone on the street. He called the violence "unacceptable."

Tuggle does not believe Hayes was the target but said "there are no major leads."

Family friend Timeka Patterson made a 'get well' poster with a doll which she plans to take to the hospital. "She's just learning her abc's and she gets hit with a bullet. It shouldn't happen. Period."
