General Motors, Lyft Expand Car Rental Program

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors and ride-hailing service Lyft are expanding their Express Drive short-term vehicle rental program to California and Colorado.

The program lets Lyft drivers rent GM cars for $99 a week or less depending on the number of Lyft rides they complete. It launched in Chicago in March and has expanded to Boston, Washington D.C. and Baltimore.

Express Drive will launch in San Francisco this summer and Los Angeles and Denver this fall. Lyft estimates it has 130,000 potential drivers in those cities who might use the program.

California drivers will have access to Chevrolet's new all-electric Bolt.

GM President Dan Ammann and Lyft President John Zimmer say the program has outpaced their expectations, but they won't say how many cars Lyft drivers are renting right now.
