Family Killed In D.C. Mansion Murders Laid To Rest

WASHINGTON, DC (WJZ) -- Many fought back tears at a funeral for the Maryland executive and his family who were murdered inside their DC mansion.

WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren reports on the memorial and concerns that not everyone has been arrested for the brutal crime.

Hundreds came out to honor the Savopoulous family as questions persist about who killed them.

As bells tolled, one-by-one, pallbearers carried caskets draped in yellow flowers with the bodies of Amy, Savvas and Philip Savopoulous.

They-- along with their housekeeper Vera Figueroa- were held hostage in the family's DC mansion, which was was then set on fire.

Authorities says young Philips was tortured.

The two surviving sisters, who were away at boarding schools at the time, stood outside Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral as their mom, dad and brother were lead away to burial.

"So sad. There's not much to say -- just heartbreaking, tragic," John Omren, a friend and business associate said. 'Death ends and news life begins, and that's the way it is."

Police arrested Daron Wint for the murders. He once worked for Savvas Savopoulous at American Ironworks in Maryland.

Investigators say he's seen on this surveillance video running away after he torched his former boss' sports car in Prince George's County.

They connected Wint through DNA they found on a pizza he had delivered to the home.

Wint's lawyer met with him over the weekend.

"He's not capable of a vicious crime life this," Attorney Robin Flicker said. "They should satrt looking for people who've been convicted of torturing animals or torturing other people."

Investigators believe more people were involved in the crime, but have yet to make any more arrests.

"These thee amazing people went to a better place, and we should emulate the example of service they left behind," said Doria Paleocrassas, a fired. "may God rest their souls and give them peace."

Housekeeper Vera Figueroa's body will be sent to her native El Salvador.

Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser were among those who attended Monday's service.
