Freezing Rain Creates Messy Commute, Causes Accidents Monday

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ)— It was treacherous in Baltimore this morning, some spots slippery, others not at all.

Mike Schuh spent hours in the ice and rain and has more on Monday's messy commute.

The main roads, heavy with salt, were wide open.

But on Ruxton Road, the salt came after the accident.

Kevin Wenger's car sits at the end of the tracks.

"Basically there was a white van in front of me that slowed down and I started to hit my breaks and lose control. And it with either hit the guard rail or hit that tree, trying to avoid all of that," said Kevin Wenger,

Even the police car sent to investigate slid into the guardrail. He threaded that needle, a lesson learned.

"Last time the roads were icy I didn't go into work and everyone else got into work were like: the roads are fine, and I'm like ok, I'm going to try to come into work today,"said Wenger.

The sound of safety is salt hitting the pavement and it makes all the difference.

In Carroll County a heavy sheet on the street, handfuls of salt keep the feet planted.

Jimmy Lantz made it to work during the worst of it.

"The further back the roads were, the more rural they were, the more ice was on them," said Lantz.

And with many schools delayed, rush hour still happened, just at 10 o'clock this morning not 8:00 a.m.
