Frederick Police Plan To Ask For Body Cameras

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The Frederick Police Department plans to ask for funding for 12 body cameras in the city's 2016 fiscal year budget.

Lt. Dwight Sommers tells The News-Post of Frederick that while demands across the country that law enforcers wear body cameras have increased recently, research began several years ago.

The biggest barrier to providing officers with body cameras is cost, Sommers says. Twelve body cameras could cost a total of $8,000 to $10,000 at $400 to $600 per camera, in addition to batteries, server space and more.

The department will try to find grants for the body cameras.
