Frederick Deputy Guilty Of W.Va. Larceny

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Frederick County sheriff's deputy is resigning after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor larceny charge in Berkeley County, W.Va.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Harmison said Wednesday that Todd Joia pleaded guilty to petty larceny Tuesday in Berkeley County Magistrate Court in Martinsburg.

He says Joia, of Fairplay, Md., received a suspended, one-year jail sentence and was placed on a year's probation. Joia also must make restitution of money stolen from two slot machines at Ruby's, a video lottery business near Spring Mills, W.Va.

The owner reported that about $2,200 was taken.

Harmison says Joia also resigned as part of the plea deal.

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office announced in December it had suspended Joia after he was charged with the felony offense of entering without breaking.
