Fort Detrick Looking For Possible Remnants Of Agent Orange
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Army officials are having contractors searching the Army's flagship biodefense laboratory at Fort Detrick in Frederick for possible remnants of Agent Orange and radioactive waste.
The Frederick News-Post reports that Fort Detrick Environmental Restoration Program Manager Joseph Gortva told the Restoration Advisory Board on Wednesday evening that it is unlikely that the contractors will find residual herbicides or radioactive byproducts there.
The board serves as a forum to keep the community, government agencies and Fort Detrick officials informed of all cleanup activities on post.
The Army's current investigation into herbicide-related toxins and radioactivity started with a review of archival records pertaining to the post's history of biological warfare research and possible releases of waste into the environment.
