Former Suspect In Chandra Levy Murder Case Sent Back To El Salvador

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The man who was convicted of Chandra Levy's murder, before those charges were dropped before a retrial, has been sent back to El Salvador.

Ingmar Guandique, who is an illegal immigrant, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation after charges were dropped against him in the Chandra Levy case.

Levy, a Washington, D.C. intern, vanished in 2001. Her decomposed body was found one year later.

In 2010, Guandique was convicted of her murder. He was already in jail for attacking women in the same park where Levy's body was found.

A judge later granted Guandique a new trial after doubts were raised about a key witness, and before that retrial, the U.S. Attorney's Office dropped all charges after a witness was reportedly recorded saying he was lying to prosecutors when he claimed Guandique confessed to Levy's killing.
