Former Prince George's County Executive Dies At 63
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Former Prince George's County Executive Wayne Curry has died.
Curry died at his Upper Marlboro home Tuesday at the age of 63.
In 1994, he became the first African-American to be elected to the county's top office and is known for changing the political climate and increasing economic development during his eight-year tenure as executive.
Curry was diagnosed with lung cancer last summer and right up to his death, he served as an anti-smoking advocate.
Democratic Lt. Governor Anthony Brown said in a statement Wednesday that the county has lost a leader who fought "for justice, fairness, economic equality, and a brighter future for all of our children." Brown says Curry had "a passion for service and a lifelong commitment to advocacy."
