Former Md. National Guard Head James Fretterd Dies at 86

FEDERALSBURG, Md. (AP) — Retired Lt. Gen. James F. Fretterd, who headed the Maryland National Guard for 16 years, has died.

In a statement, the Maryland National Guard said Fretterd died Saturday at his home in Federalsburg. He was 86. Fretterd served in the Maryland National Guard for 52 years, from 1951 to his retirement in 2003.

He was the head of the Maryland National Guard, its adjutant general, from 1987 to 2003.

The Maryland National Guard said that a public visitation will be held Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Fretterd Community Center in Denton. Funeral services will take place there Friday.
