Former Journalist, Maryland Congresswoman In Hospice Care

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--A former journalist for the Baltimore Sun and Maryland Congresswoman is now in hospice care.

Prior to working for the Baltimore Sun, Helen Bentley, 92, was appointed Federal Maritime Commission Chairman in 1969 under president Richard Nixon. Bentley was later elected to the House of Representatives in 1985, where she served for 10 years. In 2006, then-governor Robert Erlich named the Port of Baltimore after her.

"I've known Helen Bentley well for more than 35 years — capped by her endorsement of me as I announced my campaign last fall," said Amie Hoeber, a Republican nominee for U.S. Congress. "I will miss her advice and counsel. She made me a better person. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time, and I just want them to know that all Maryland Republicans will treasure her memory."
