First US Penny Goes To Auction In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The first U.S. penny is slated to go to auction at Baltimore's convention center.

The auction, hosted by Stack's Bowers Galleries, will take place at the Convention Center, where the coin, known as the Birch Cent, will be sold.

Other rare coins, including the 1861 Confederate half dollar, which is the only half dollar to be created by the Confederacy, and the 1792 Silver Center cent, designed by Thomas Jefferson, will also be for sale at the auction.

The whole coin collection is estimated to be worth between $5 million and $10 million.

The auction will take place March 26-29.
