Firefighters Rescue Cat Trapped Inside Burning NE Baltimore Home

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ) -- Fire crews rescued a pet cat trapped in the basement of a burning home in Northeast Baltimore Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Firefighters called to the scene, located in the 3000 block of East Northern Parkway, after 2 p.m. found a two-story home going up in flames, according to the Baltimore City Fire Department. Flames could be seen shooting from a second-floor window.

Crews had to get past debris around the property to get inside the home and reach the fire, authorities said. Once inside, it took them just 30 minutes to bring the flames under control and free the cat stranded in the basement.

No one was hurt, but six families were displaced by the fire, fire department spokesman Sam Johnson said.

Investigators suspect the fire, which caused a total of $18,000 in damage, was sparked by a window-mounted air conditioning unit.
