Firefighters Rescue 5 Including Child From Balconies In Md.

LANGLEY PARK, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County fire officials say firefighters rescued five people, including a small child, from a burning apartment building in Langley Park.

The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday on the top floor of a three-story building.

Firefighters used ladders to remove five people from their top-floor balconies. They couldn't use the stairs to escape because of smoke and heat.

Fire officials say the child who was rescued was about 1 year old. The child was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and was in good condition Saturday night. No one else was injured.

The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes. The cause is under investigation.
