One Person Killed In Three-Alarm Fire In Havre De Grace

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. (WJZ) -- Firefighters battled a fatal three-alarm fire at a home in Havre de Grace Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 4000 block of Webster Road around 12:20 p.m. and found the building fully engulfed in flames, officials said.

One person was found dead at the scene, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office. That person was the only one home at the time the fire broke out.

It took 50 firefighters around two-and-a-half hours to contain the blaze.

Buddy Reed said he saw the smoke from a distance. By the time the former volunteer firefighter drove over to the scene, crews were in a full-on battle.

"It was intense," Reed said. "It was pretty hot."

Maryland State Fire Marshal Spokesperson Emily Witty said neighbors were the first to call for help. By the time crews were able to control the fire and make their way inside the home, however, the victim was found dead.

"Two and a half hours is a really long time for a home to burn like that," Witty said. "And because we are in a more rural area, that makes getting to it more difficult."

The investigation remains ongoing.

"Nothing leads us to [believe this was suspicious], but again, we are very early on in the investigation," Witty said. "So we can't rule it out, but at this point in time, nothing suggests that."
