Firearm Deer Hunting Season Reopens In Much Of State

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Deer hunters in most of Maryland are getting a couple more days to hunt with modern firearms.

The winter portion of the firearm deer season opens Friday and continues through Saturday everywhere except Garrett and Allegany counties, and Washington County west of Clear Spring.

On Sunday, hunters can shoot deer with modern firearms on private lands only in Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Queen Anne's, Somerset, St. Mary's and Worcester counties, and Washington County east of Clear Spring.

The statewide firearm season ran from Nov. 28 to Dec. 12. The short winter season is meant to further reduce the deer population in selected counties.

The archery season for deer continues through Jan. 30.
