Fire Employee's Post On Racial Tensions Draws Scrutiny

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore County Fire Department is looking into a Facebook post made by an employee that discusses racial tensions in the department.

The message was posted under what appears to be an alias. It's unclear exactly when it was written.

The post cautioned co-workers not to "start behaving like their ancestors during Slavery and Pre-Civil rights days." It also read: "We are a new generation of African-Americans" followed by a threat suggesting violence.

Fire department spokeswoman Elise Armacost declined to name the employee attached to the account, but says they are aware of the post.

Armacost says they've spent a lot of time educating employees about appropriate ways to use social media. The fire department is reviewing whether any of its social media policy rules were broken.
