Fire Destroys Building At Former Md. Naval Station

ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- State and federal authorities are investigating the cause of an early morning fire that destroyed a building at a former naval station in Cecil County.

Authorities say 35 firefighters from Maryland and Pennsylvania were dispatched to the former Bainbridge Naval Training Center in Port Deposit at about 2:45 a.m. on Sunday. No injuries were reported.

The state fire marshal and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the origin of the blaze, which consumed a vacant three-story building at the former naval station.

The building was constructed in 1901 as a school for boys and was later used as a naval training base from 1942 until 1976.

Authorities say they have not yet assessed the extent of damage to the property.
