Fire At Laurel Boys' Treatment Facility Under Investigation

LAUREL, Md. (AP) -- Officials are investigating a fire at a treatment facility for boys in Laurel.

Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Eric Hammack tells The Capital the fire happened Friday night at the New Beginnings Youth Development Center.

Officials say the fire was fully involved when firefighters arrived. Capt. Russ Davies said the building that burned was reportedly vacant.

District of Columbia fire department officials were unable to provide additional information about the fire Sunday.

The facility is owned and managed by the D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services. According to the department website, New Beginnings is a secure residential treatment facility for boys with the most serious and chronic offenses.

The D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services didn't return requests for comment by the newspaper Sunday.
