Federal Official Talks STEM Careers With High School Girls

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A high-ranking official of the federal government's flagship engineering laboratory is making time to discuss science and engineering careers with high school girls in Frederick.

Joannie Chin is acting deputy director of the engineering lab at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg. She's the featured speaker at Wednesday's meeting of Women in Science and Engineering, an extracurricular program of Frederick County Public Schools.

Organizers say the program is open to female students in grades 9 through 12.

The program provides opportunities for students to meet staff members of prestigious research facilities in the region and make connections for possible internships.
