3 Killed, 2 Injured In 4-Vehicle Route 40 Crash In Washington County

BOONSBORO, Md. (WJZ) -- Three people were killed and two others injured in a four-vehicle crash on Route 40 near Boonsboro Monday afternoon, state police said.

The crash was reported at the intersection of Route 40 and Mount Lena Road around 2:30 p.m.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene and another person was flown to Shock Trauma. A fifth person was taken to Meritus Health Hospital in Hagerstown.

Route 40 was closed and a detour was been set up, police said. The closure ran through rush hour.

Officials said a dump truck, car and two motorcycles were involved.

The deceased victims were identified as Stacy Virts, 50, of Sharpsburg, Maryland, Brooke Riley, 25, of Middletown, Maryland, and Anna Stottlemyer, 85, of Boonsboro, Maryland.  Each person was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The injured were identified as David Stottlemyer, 58, of Boonsboro, Maryland, and Jerome Murphy, 61, of Hagerstown, Maryland.

David Stottlemyer was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.  Murphy was transported by ambulance to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.

The preliminary investigation revealed Murphy was driving a Kenworth dump truck westbound on Rt. 40 when he struck the rear of a Toyota Prius, which was stopped on westbound Rt. 40 waiting to make a left turn onto Mt. Lena Road.

Both the car and dump truck then crossed into the opposite lane and struck the two Harley Davidson motorcycles traveling eastbound, driven by Virts and Riley.

The crash remains under investigation.
