Family Friends Shed Light On Md. Governor-Elect Larry Hogan

EDGEWATER, Md. (WJZ) -- The general election upset in the governor's race leaves many Marylanders wanting to know more about the man who will lead the state in the next four years.

Political reporter Pat Warren found some folks in Larry Hogan's hometown Edgewater willing to share what they know.

Election morning, Larry Hogan shakes hands at Chick and Ruth's Delly, where regulars are state leaders.

Little did Mike Busch know then he'd be calling Hogan governor, and for Democrats, not happily. This is the place where Hogan goes, and they're always glad he came.

At Chad's Barbeque in Edgewater, everybody knows his name.

"Well, we talked about it and we really both thought he didn't have a chance. But as it turned out, he sure did," Chad Sargent said.

Larry Hogan has been a regular at Chad's for seven years.

"I think our wings are probably his favorite thing on the menu," Sargent said,

"He lives in the neighborhood I grew up in, so we had a common denominator anyway. He's the kind of man that you want to be friends with. I know it sounds corny, but he's so likable and he's so real," Sandy Sargent said.

"Well, I'm a lifelong Democrat and I voted for Larry," one woman said.

"Larry is a genuine person," another person said.

"And I'm looking forward to a great change," a woman said

"He loves Maryland," Sandy Sargent said. "And there are a lot of people who are moving out. It's exciting to know we're going to have a great reason to stay."

At Chick and Ruth's, it's tradition that the governor name a sandwich. Hogan can pick anything he wants on it, but smoked wings is already taken.

In his news conference after the election, Hogan promised Democrats as well as Republicans will hold positions in his administration.

Larry Hogan's father is a former congressman and Prince George's County executive.
