Family Asks For Donations For Boy Whose Foot Was Amputated By Tractor

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The family of a child who had to have his left leg amputated below the knee after being run over with a lawn mower in April is asking for donations for his prosthetics.

The boy, a 3-year-old named Byron, was flown to Johns Hopkins by Maryland State Police helicopter after the accident.

Later, Johns Hopkins told the Queen Anne's County Department of Emergency Services that the quick response by Centreville Police, Major Dwayne Boardman of the Sheriff's Office, the Goodwill Fire Company and paramedics, and especially the application of a tourniquet, likely saved his life.

"Thanks to the advancements in prosthetics in recent years, Byron will live a full and active life," writes Connie Gray, a close friend of Byron's family, on the YouCaring donation page.

"Soon he will be running around again and playing soccer and this gives us a great sense of faith and hope! However, the costs associated with a quality prosthetic can be extremely expensive. Since Byron is so young and has years of growth ahead of him, he will need quite a few prosthetic legs as he gets taller."

The family's goal is to raise $25,000.
