Duff Goldman Discusses Importance Of Healthy Breakfast

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md (WJZ) -- A Baltimore County school is celebrating Monday and they're doing it with the help of a celebrity chef.

Ron Matz has more on the Maryland Breakfast Challenge and a first place finish in Rosedale.

The buzz was loud. The kids were in a spin for the results of the Maryland Breakfast Challenge.

Celebrity chef Duff Goldman came to Red House Run Elementary School to talk about the importance of a healthy breakfast.

"There are so many kids coming to school hungry. If they're coming to school hungry, if they're rushing around and they didn't have time to eat, they're not going to learn. Their brains aren't on because they didn't give it any fuel," Goldman said. "What we're really trying to promote is breakfast in school so these kids will have an educational rich day."

He's part of the Team No Kid Hungry Campaign.

"We have to make sure our kids are receiving nutritious meals when they need it and there's no more important meal than breakfast," said Maryland No Kid Hungry Director David Sloan.

More than 900 schools across the state took part in the Breakfast Challenge and here in Baltimore County, Red House Run Elementary came out on top. The school won $2,000.

"We won and it's great and it means that kids are making better decisions in regards to what they're eating, how they're eating and when they're eating," said teacher Jordan Birnbaum.

"It's like brushing your teeth or going to the gym. You have to make time; you have to make eating breakfast happen," Goldman said. "Chefs are big children. We're not grownups. When we hear kids are going hungry, it doesn't make any sense. Seeing these little guys get breakfast is so important."

Red House Run Elementary won the Breakfast Challenge by serving over 6,000 healthy breakfasts to students between November and January.
