Ice A Concern For Drivers All Across Maryland

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Deep freeze. A snowy, sloppy day turns into an icy, dangerous night.

All across Maryland, ice coating the roads is showing its power.

In Baltimore County, an ambulance on its way to an emergency call slid and then flipped over on an ice-covered roadway. The crew stuck inside had to be rescued, but they are OK.

In Baltimore City, a car was no match for the slick roads. And for people walking, they had to be careful too.

"People are really going to hurt themselves out here. That's all it is," Steven Slaybaugh said.

Slaybaugh, shoveling snow for much of the day, got a major shock Monday night when ice suddenly appeared.

"It's frozen solid. You can see. It's nothing but a sheet of ice," he said.

In Anne Arundel County, they fanned out more than 200 pieces of equipment to treat the roads, starting Sunday night. They will work through Monday night into the morning.

Crews there also responded to dozens of crashes that continued into the night.

Once again, winter is showing its force, turning much of what it touches into ice.

"Please be aware of your surroundings--put the phone down, don't text and drive, stop changing the radio--just really pay attention to what you're doing on the road ," said Cpl. Jacklyn Davis, Anne Arundel County Police Department.

Crews will be working throughout the night. One bright spot--it's going to be signficantly warmer on Tuesday.
