Dozens Starting New Year With Potomac Plunge

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. (AP) -- Dozens of people are starting the new year with a bone-chilling plunge into the Potomac River in the western Maryland town of Williamsport.

Coordinator Cyndi Powell says about 50 people pre-registered for Thursday's event. She says she expects about 60 more to show up at River Bottom Park for the midday dip.

The National Weather Service says air temperatures won't get much above freezing.

The event is a fundraiser for the local Boys and Girls Club and the Williamsport volunteer fire and rescue services.
