Deputy Injured When Truck Hits Cruiser During Pursuit

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Mount Airy man is charged with assaulting a Frederick County sheriff's deputy during a chase.

Twenty-four-year-old Delbert Hayes Jr. was ordered held on $450,000 bail during a hearing Tuesday.

Hayes couldn't be reached for comment. No defense attorney is listed in court records.

A deputy went to Linganore High School near Frederick Monday evening to check on a parked truck similar to one state police had pursued that afternoon.

The deputy saw the truck leaving and stopped it, but it took off as he approached on foot, hitting him with the side mirror.

Deputies pursued the truck into a field, where they say it rammed a cruiser, injuring a deputy but not seriously.

Hayes was arrested in Monrovia by a deputy who says he found him covering the truck.
