D.C. Police Probe Death Of Man In Custody Of Security Officers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- D.C. police say they're investigating the death of a man who was taken into the custody of special security officers.

Police announced late Tuesday that they're probing the death of 27-year-old Alonzo Smith of Washington after the incident Sunday morning.

Police say officers responded to a report of an assault in progress at a residential building in southeast Washington early Sunday. When they arrived, police say officers found Smith handcuffed in the custody of security officers working there; he was unconscious and not breathing.

Police say officers summoned medical aid and began lifesaving efforts. Smith died at a hospital.

Karen Silver, a lawyer who represents Smith's family, says he was a special education teacher and model. She says the family is trying to find out what happened.
