Cumberland Is Opposing Wind Power Project On Dans Mountian
CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- A western Maryland county is opposing a developer's bid to circumvent local zoning rules so it can build a long-delayed, 17-turbine wind-power project on Dans Mountain near Cumberland.
The Cumberland Times-News reported Monday that Allegany County has filed paperwork with the state Public Service Commission objecting to the plan by Dans Mountain Wind Force.
The developer filed for a state Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity after the county zoning board rejected the project last year. The developer is asking regulators to find that the county's land-use rules don't apply to the project.
Opponents say the tall turbines would adversely affect property values and public health.
The wind farm would be the first in Allegany County. It was first proposed in 2001 as a 25-turbine project.
