CT Man Arrested in White Marsh With $620K Worth of Marijuana

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ)-- Maryland State Police arrested and charged a Connecticut man for possessing 124 pounds of marijuana valued at more than $620,000 Saturday in White Marsh.

One of the larger drug busts state police have seen in years.

"It's rare to get 100 pounds," said Sgt. Edward Luers of the Maryland State Police.

John Paul Demorest, 67, was driving northbound on I-95 shortly after 5 p.m., when a trooper observed Demorest driving a minivan above the posted speed limit.

"In the vehicle is a rental agreement, and it states right on the rental agreement [the van] to only be driven in Connecticut," said Luers.

The trooper stopped the vehicle and observed several factors of criminal activity and called the K-9 unit which led to the discovery of 5 fully loaded trash bags of marijuana concealed under blankets.

"It was in 5 large black trash bags, there was 108 individually sealed packets," said Luers. "95 is a pipeline from Florida to Maine, it's just that main highway where criminals can travel up and down highway to get anywhere on east coast."

Demorest was charged with felony possession of marijuana, possessing with intent to distribute, drug kingpin charges, along with misdemeanor traffic charges.

His bond is currently set at $1 million.
