Cruiser Crashes, Ends Up Nearly Vertical Against Pole

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a Prince George's County sheriff's deputy's cruiser ended up nearly vertical against a telephone pole after a crash.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Sharon Taylor said that the deputy was speeding to the scene of a fight on Monday night when the crash occurred on Central Avenue in the Capitol Heights area. She says the deputy swerved to avoid hitting an SUV and struck the telephone pole.

County fire department spokesman Mark Brady says that the cruiser ended up against the telephone pole, but the deputy suffered only minor injuries.

The people in the SUV were evaluated as a precaution, but Taylor says they were not hurt.
