Crews Rip Up Turf, Real Grass Coming To M&T Bank Stadium

BALTIMORE (WZJ)—While it may look the same week-to-week, year-to-year, there have been four different kinds of playing field down at M&T Bank Stadium.

As Mike Schuh reports, the 5th field is natural grass and it's coming soon!

The field, logos and all are being rolled up and taken away.

"Today the process is we're rolling up the artificial turf and actually ripping it out," said Don Follett, Director of Grounds for the Baltimore Ravens.

For the first time in 14 years there will be no plastic rug at the stadium.

"It's a really tall carpet," says Follett.

But given the preference, players prefers real grass.

"I've been asking the Ravens for several years can we put in real grass back in here, and the players came to us and asked if they could put in real grass, and they talked  to Mr. Biscotti and here we are putting in real grass," said Follett.

The turf with woven purple yard lines has been set aside. It will be cut up, mounted and sold as souvenirs. The price and date has not yet been announced.

The field was considered one of the best artificial turfs in the NFL, but no tears are being shed watching it being sawn to pieces.

Follett says,"I've had more than one player come up to me and say you are our hero for putting in this real grass downtown."
